Flashback and Foodie Friday ~MawMaw's Blackberry Pie

After a weeks hiatus, Flashback Friday has returned! This week I flashback to a recipe and a memory.....my MawMaw Nezat's Blackberry pie. My family was here last week and the blackberries were abundant, so I thought it was a perfect time to bake a pie with my Mom...one that her Mom made very well. My grandmother was a great cook, baker and candy maker and she made many things I loved, but for some reason blackberry pie stands out as a favorite. Her recipe is no different than thousands of others you might find on the internet, but there's a reason an old standby recipe like this is still around! There's no reason to mess with perfection! Can I also add that I LOVED baking this with my Momma :-)

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
4 cups fresh blackberries
1 1/2 tbsp butter

Directions:

Mix sugar, flour & cinnamon. Sprinkle 2tbsp of mixture inside the pastry bottom. Mix rest lightly with the blackberries & pour into pastry. Dot with butter. Cover pie with lattice crust & sprinkle strips lightly with sugar and then with cinnamon. Bake 35-45 minutes in preheated 425 degree oven.

Pie Crust

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups shortening
3 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 egg (well beaten)
5 tbsp cold water
1 tbsp vinegar

Directions:

Cut shortening into flour & salt. Combine egg, water & vinegar. Pour liguid into flour mixture all at once. Blend with a spoon just until flour is all moistened. Form into 4 portions.

Makes 2 double crusts

The blackberry pie is just lovely and sounds delicious. ... A huge piece with a big scoop of vanilla would be perfect. ... How fun to have baked it with your mom.

Suzy, how I love blackberry pie. My grandmother and I used to bake them in her camper during the summer. We'd pick, then bake :-) How nice that you got to bake the pie with your mom :-)

Hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend.

What a wonderful memory making experience this must have been to make this pie with your mom! I envy you...

Blackberries are so expensive here so you are very lucky to have an abundance.
