Flashback and Foodie Friday ~Happy Birthday Spice Cake

For this weeks Flashback we're headed to 1935! And that's wayback :-) In fact it was the year my parents were born. At some point I picked up a weathered and well used cookbook at a garage sale. I often take it down and browse through it, but had never made it anything from it until this past weekend.

I'm not sure who Ida was or what a Service book is, but it has some pretty yummy sounding recipes in it. And some really great offers..look at all you could get for $1.00 in 1935. Take a peek at the Raspberry Roll recipe at the bottom left. I wanna give that one a try.

This Sunday was my husband Randy's birthday and knowing he loves spice flavored anything I decided to give a recipe from the book a try. Well...it isn't exactly from the book. It's taped inside the book along with lots of other recipes that caught the eye of the owner of Miss Ida's book.

What intrigued me about this recipe was the Raisin Cream Filling. Weird...but like a moth to a flame...I had to fly in closer.... And here is the filling in all its glory. It has a familiar taste, but I can't put my finger on where I would have tasted such a thing before. It's good though!

The cake itself was pretty good too although I think I'd use an extra egg next time to make it a little moister.

Most importantly though is that Randy (my nonsweeteater) liked it! Happy Birthday Dear! The cake part is very similar to the Tomato Soup cake he often requests. Not exactly a beauty...but it made a nice presentation too.

If you have a flashback you'd like to share please add your link below.

Suzy, that cake does sound good! Glad that Randy enjoyed it :-) I love looking through old cookbooks, but like you, I rarely try the recipes.

Thanks for hosting Flashback Friday. I decided to do a flashback and join you. Have a great weekend my friend!

The cake looks beautiful! I have an old cook book that I love to page through but have never made anything from. I should give a recipe a try too.

Nice stopping by for a visit!
Kindly, ldh

Suzy, don't you love those old cookbooks; I love to sit and read them...like reading a history book.
Most of the cakes I have made from old books are either too dry or too heavy.
All that counts is that the birthday boy enjoyed it. Happy belated birthday, Randy!

It almost looks like a German chocolate cake without the coconut. I'd like to try it. Aren't old cookbooks fun?

I love old cookbooks too. It is interesting to see how recipes evolve, if you find one that has a newer version out today.

What a great find, Suzy, AND a belated Happy Birthday to Randy.

What wonderful sounding cake, and the filling sounds very, very tasty. The filling is full of goodies, but I've never heard of ground raisins. Did you just food process them?

What a cool old cookbook! It would be fun to know what the service part means. Maybe it has something to do with entertaining? The cake does looks really good and great that Randy liked it!

I love an old cookbook! So much history between those pages! Don't you wish you could see and talk to the cooks who used them?

As long as the birthday boy liked it, that is what matters!
Hope you are fun with your dear guests!
