Flashback Friday ~ Ice Cream Memories
For my flashback this week I am putting in a shameless plug for my virtual Ice Cream Social that will be this weekend (July11-12th). Please share any ice creamed themed related post! I will have Mr. Linky up tonight (Friday), but you are free to add your link at any time this weekend. Your favorite homemade ice cream recipes would be awesome, but I'd also love to hear or see about your favorite recipe containing store bought ice cream, your favorite ice treats bought either at a restaurant or store, you ice cream dishes & tablescapes, someone you love eating ice cream, your favorite ice cream memories...really anything goes as long as it's ice cream related!
So on to the flashback..Ice Cream related of course! I'm flashing back to the summer of 1990. I was in Law School and spent 6 weeks in a summer program at the University in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. If there ever was an ice cream town Aix is definitely one! Its a beautiful little city that dates back to Roman times and it's also a vacation destination for many Frenchman. It's not a flashy fast paced place.....the biggest pasttime seemed to be sitting at a cafe on the famed Cours Mirabeau, people watching and eating ice cream...and not just any icecream. These were huge masterpieces piled high in icy cold metal bowls. Some so fancy they had sparklers sticking in them when brought to the table. I wish I had a photo of some of those fantastic ice cream dishes but here is one of the famous Cours Mirabeau...I'm sure one of those cafe tables has some ice cream on it! I need to add that I didn't take this photo! But it is beautiful isn't it?
Ice cream was everywhere that summer and I grew to love one flavor more than any other..a flavor that was especially hard to find once I returned home to the United States. Especially hard if I wanted to best of the best....Italian Gelato. Hands down the Italians make the best ice cream on the face of the earth. I recently found some pretty good Pistachio Gelato at the grocery store.
Not exactly the Cours Mirabeau....but the taste does bring me back!
Please go check out all of the great posts at Designs by Gollum...she hosts Foodie Friday. This is my submission this week!

I'm getting so excited for this event - who doesn't like ice cream!! You did bring back a flashback for me - the first time I had Pistachio ice cream was the sunmmer of 1971 in Rome! It was also the first time I tried bing cherries... Other firsts which I won't get into!! LOL
I am so excited about your Ice Cream Social. See you tomorrow.
Thanks for hosting the ice cream social...we LOVE ice cream at our house. I will be reposting my recent ice cream pies post. See you tomorrow. Beginning August 5, I will be hosting Crock Pot Wednesdays at Diningwithdebbie.blogspot.com. I hope you will join me. Thanks again for sharing.
That dripping cone is making me crave ice cream, I can't wait to see what everyone will be posting at tomorrow's social!
I am ready, Suzy! I am going to post and I will link up tonight when you have yours done!
I want to get first "licks".. :)
Pistachio! That was my favorite as a little girl. I always got a double dip of pistachio.
Looking forward to the Ice Cream Social! See you tomorrow!
Looking forward to the ice cream social. Your photos are wonderful. Thanks for sharing them with us. Have a wonderful day.
Beautiful blog here. I wish I would have known about your ice cream social sooner because I would certainly have partisipated. As it is I will come back to check it all out. I hope you have a lovely party. Ice cream is my favorite. Yummy! It's Charli's favorite too.
Suzy, I am very fond of pistachio, and agree with you about the gelato. My first stop when we go to New York City is to get a gelato in Little Italy! The best!
I've been tweeking a recipe for the ice cream social, and I think I finally have a winner that I can share.
Can't wait!!
Can't wait for your ice cream social! Great photo's!
Wonderful memories, Suzy! That pistachio gelato would be a favorite of mine too. I'll have to see if I can find it here.
What a great shot of that cafe in France!
nice ice cream shot! I'll be posting my ice cream shots later this evening..*smiles*
Wonderful flashback, Suzy, Cours Mirabeau looks gorgeous. Your pic would have made a wonderful inspiration for an Impressionist-style painting. ... Gorgeous.
I've never had gelato in Italy, but the best gelato I've ever had was at Cafe Gelato at the Bellagio Hotel. We would stop there every night before bed. YUM!
