Flashback and Foodie Friday
Because we order pizza to be delivered on Fridays, I use this time to dig through my archives and post about days and food gone by. This week Gollum of Design's by Gollum has kicked off an event called Foodie Friday. There aren't many rules, and any food is allowed, so when possible I will be combining my Flashbacks with Foodie Friday.
Since I moved to the Pacific Northwest 5 1/2 years ago, Mardi Gras week always makes me a little bit homesick, because it's a time when I would get together with family and friends if I was still there. So, I thought now would be a great time to post about some "Louisiana" foods for this Flashback Foodie Friday.
First up...King Cake! I actually made this myself last year, but my parents have been known to fly out here just to bring me a bakery bought king cake during the Mardi Gras season. Well maybe it's to see me too, but they say it's to bring the cake.... Our favorite place to buy them is at Keller's Bakery in Lafayette Louisiana. I like the Banana Split variety.
And if I was in Louisiana right now, this is what I would want to be eating! Crawfish!!!
There's nothing more fun than a crawfish boil with family and friends. The crawfish are poured out on a table and everybody just digs in.
If I was super lucky I could convince someone to make Jambalaya as well. You can make this inside, but it's more fun to do it outside in a huge pot like this! My extended family has a yearly gathering at my cousin's house and this jambalaya is the star.
Thanks for joining in on my Louisiana food flashback! Now go take a peek at all of the other great blogs participating in Foodie Friday.

Oh, you have made me homesick for Louisiana! The King Cake is gorgeous!! I remember one of the hotels in downtown N.O. offered "all the lobster you can eat," and boy, they never offered that again!!! LOL
Suzy - now i remember the King Cake..that is so festive looking..I think I would pass on the crawfish boil, I would have to be blindfolded..LOL Love hearing about your LA roots!!
Oh, once I went to visit my brother in Arkansas and he took me to a place that poured their shrimp out on the table with hush puppies and veggies and it was sooooo delicious and sooooo fun...
Thanks for sharing all these good looking foods...
You know you made me hungry, right? I use to do foreclosures in LA for First Union (before they merged w/ Wachovia), and the attorney we used in LA, always sent us a King's Cake. It was fun seeing who got the baby. I love some jumbalaya (sp?) too. We like it at the House of Blues, although it's probably better in LA! :O) My cousin use to have a dog named Jigs! Congrats on being an aunt again! Have you been to the blog The Lifes and Loves of Grumpy's Honeybunch? I think that's the right name. She posts a recipe every day. When she posts, it comes up on my sidebar.
OH this looks so good and I have never had King cake or even heard of it until now...so thanks for sharing this great post...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
Gollum...they weren't used to all of the cajuns who saw them as giant crawfish!!
Barb, if you like shrimp I think you might enjoy the crawfish too. I'd peel you some :-)
BJ..shrimp on a table sounds just as good to me! I love shrimp boils too. Hush puppies are one of my favs. Thanks for stopping by.
Sorry for making you hungry tardevil! I'm making myself hungry too. Poor Wachovia..they are now taken over by Wells Fargo. Talk about the food chain! My Jig's name is short for Jigme - fearless one lol. I thought he needed a little bit of something to toughen him up. I have visited the Grumpys honeybunch blog. It's a good one. Thanks for visiting..I enjoyed your blog as well.
Thanks Gloria! There is a whole history to the King Cake. I will try to share in another post. The most important thing to remember is if you get the baby in your piece of King Cake you have to buy the next one! Thanks for stopping by.
It's ALL looking soo good Suzy! I'm sure you must get homesick, especially at this time of year, but I appreciate you sharing the good food traditions with us.
Happy Foodie Friday!
I love your Flashback Friday's Suzy! I'll always remember your cake... and may even try one myself. And how fun to see the jambalaya... what a feast!
I miss eating crawfish! I think I'll find some during the summer...
Thanks for sharing! Carolyn
WOW, I loved this flashback! I have never had any of these foods but sure would be game to try them with you someday! What a feast is right.
Suzy, what a great post and Fabulous Flashback Friday.
Whenever you comment or post about LA, I can hear the "love" in your words. I have a feeling you'll always be a southern girl.
I love the King Cake and your picture of crawfish (here they're either crawdads or crayfish) takes me back to our trips to New Orleans. John likes them broiled and barbecued. I prefer shrimp. :)
I love King's Cake....and that one looks great! Linda
Wahhhaaaa, I wrote a big long post and it is gone!
That was a great post, thanks for a glimpse into your customs...!
That's one of the prettiest King's Cakes I've ever seen! Oh, those crawfish look great. I work with a Dr. from Morgan City, and he and his wife throw the greatest crawfish boils. Great post, thanks for sharing. Kathy
Nevre had King's cake but rady to try it now!
Happy Foodie Friday!
Susan
you are the perfect southern girl, great kick off~
Thanks Mary! It helps to share.
Jayne I'd be happy to share the recipe when I find it again lol. I believe it's from Southern Living
Carolyn I hope you find some crawfish! I've only seen some live locally at an Asian Market but occasionally I do see frozen tails at the grocery store.
Marsha if your travels ever take you farther down the Mississippi I will make sure my family hooks you up with some good food.
Cynthia, you hit the nail on the head..it's born and bred in me.
Thanks Linda!
Don't you hate that Kathleen. I will just try to imagine something funny that you MIGHT say.
Thanks Kathy..what a nice thing to say!
Give it a try! It's really just a glorified coffee cake, but more fun.
Thanks Jain!
What a Marvelous food fest! This would definitely be a delicious way of celebrating Mardi Gras!
Thanks for your visit to my blog for foodie Friday.
Sweet Wishes,
Sara
P.S I forgot to mention...I'm from the northwest too. We moved from So Cal 26 years ago. My family resides there, so I get a bit homesick, but I like living in the milder climate with fresh air!
Sweet Wishes,
Sara
Hi Sara and thanks for stopping by. I enjoyed my visit to your blog. So did you enjoy some sunshine today? I'm here south of Tacoma. I enjoy the coolness in general that's for sure. Summers are heavenly especially when compared to the steam bath known as Louisiana.
Oh Suzy, I might be calling you (again). I would like to make this cake for my office mates for Mardi Gras. Beautiful!
Pass the crawfish, please! I love them more than anything. Loved this post...
Happy Belated Foodie Friday!
XO,
Sheila :-)
The King Cake looks great!

Great post for the Flashback Foodie Friday!
Hey dig in Sheila! Thanks for stopping by.
Carol I think you'd really enjoy a crawfish boil. Plenty of cold beer too!
